SUMMARY:Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race
DESCRIPTION:Jon Reed Registration opens at 7:30 on Saturday morning in Old Mill Park, Fredericksburg, VA.  The five mile downriver racecourse for the Great Ra ppahannock Whitewater Canoe Race (GRWCR) is guaranteed to provide exciteme nt and challenge all racers. With the recent removal of Embrey Dam another mile of excellent whitewater has been created below the I-95 Bridge. The family oriented GRWCR is purposely designed to be more fun than flat-out c ompetition. However, the ACA Middle States Division Whitewater Championshi p races held concurrently with the GRWCR nonetheless results in some furio us paddling. There are also sprint races both solo & tandem which are ~1 mile through the fall line to Old Mill Park. There is also a marathon race (~20 miles) which starts on the Rapidan River and finishes at Old M ill Park in Fredericksburg.

SUMMARY:Liberty World Outrigger Competition
DESCRIPTION:Brent Black This OC-6 Point Series outrigger race is one of the largest sp orting events in New York Harbor and one of the premier outrigger canoe ra ces in the world, the day long competition hosts hundreds of international paddlers and represents the best of the Aloha spirit. Prior Liberty Compe titions have brought together men’s, women’s and mixed teams from Tahi ti, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, Costa Rica, England and the East and West coast of the United States. The ancestral Hawaiian sport of kings, o utrigger canoeing comes from the Polynesian heritage of seafaring outrigge r canoes. These canoes carried the ancient Polynesian people as they set f orth into uncharted waters and populated islands as far away from each oth er as Hawaii and New Zealand. The sport, even as it migrates to new island s such as Manhattan, still emphasizes bravery, teamwork and respect for Po lynesian traditions.  http://www.newyorkoutrigger.org/

SUMMARY:Blackburn Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Chunn OC-6 Point Series and OC-1 & OC-2 point series and SUP race s.  Hosted by Boston Outrigger.  The Blackburn Challenge is a 20+ mile o pen water circumnavigation of Cape Ann. Participants row or paddle small b oats in the open ocean waters around Cape Ann, and conditions can vary dra matically throughout the day. Occasionally the water can be very rough, wi th strong winds and high waves. While we have some powerboats on the cours e to monitor checkpoints, we do not provide boat escorts—you should expe ct to be out of their sight and fully independent most of the time. Unless you have solid experience in difficult conditions with the boat you plan to use, you should not enter this event. Always plan an “escape” path to safety, and if you encounter any problems along the way, pull out and c all to let us know. The orderly, safe and sportsmanlike conduct of this ev ent is your personal responsibility, and is essential to guaranteeing the future of the Blackburn Challenge

SUMMARY:Adirondack Canoe Classic 90 Miler
DESCRIPTION:The Adirondack Canoe Classic, “The 90-Miler,” was conceived in 1983 b y a small group of people in Saranac Lake looking for an event that would celebrate the historical mode of transportation in the region: human-power ed boats. The inaugural planning meeting emphasized the concept of “comm unity” – the paddlers, volunteers and followers, the people in the tow ns and villages connected by the waterways, and the businesses supported b y the people coming to explore the waterways. The original organizer, Sue D yer, was looking for “something physically challenging, naturally gorgeo us and positively memorable after the pain went away.” Bill Hulshoff, wh o had paddled the Adirondack waterways as a camper, suggested following th e route from Old Forge to Saranac Lake. The idea turned into reality when Sue pitched it to the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce Board. According to Dick Lyon, the president of the chamber at the time – “We had a great group of people with a “we can do anything we put our minds to” attit ude. Sue came up with the crazy ideas and we figured out how to make them happen!”In the second year, Terry Healey and Bill White of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation got involved to check out t he 90-Miler as a possible New York Forest Preserve Centennial event. The D EC has played an integral safety and communications role ever since. The 90 -Miler experience has featured beautiful sunny days, occasional rain, gale force winds, and even snow and hale in its 25-year history. The course ha s been adapted several times to accommodate the growing field and the mood swings of Mother Nature.Long time paddlers will remember accommodations a t The Raquette Lake Boys Camp, the Long Lake Arts and Crafts Camp, the Waw beek, and Young Life. The DEC has offered camping at Fish Creek for most o f the 25 years, and at either Forked Lake or Lake Eaton near Long Lake on Friday night. We’ve paddled in the washing machine waves on Raquette Lak e; started day two on a two mile carry heading out of Forked Lake, slogged up Stoney Creek and pulled out at Axton landing. It has been an exhilarati ng journey. The community that has developed around the event has inspired its own song. Millions of photos, magazine articles, radio pieces and eve n a 2-hour video have attempted to capture the essence of what has been de scribed by many as the highlight of their paddling year. Evidenced by the fact that for the past three years the members of The New York Marathon Ca noe Racing Association has voted the 90 – Miler its race of the year.
