SUMMARY:Rappahannock Adventure Duathlon (RAD)
DESCRIPTION:Athletes can register as SOLO Racers or as teams whichÂ  can compete in 3  categories: Male, Female, and Coed.Â  The teams can be as big as you want  them to be - they will be competing for the ultimate trophy in each of th e categories!  The paddlingÂ  will take place on the Rappahannock River.  There are some decent rapids on the 4 mile river section, so be ready to g et wet. The run is challenging with good climbs, great single track, and f ire roads. Free post race food and beer are guaranteed to all competitors.  This is set up to possibly become one of the best times you will have at  a race in 2013, so come out and join us for this "adventure".  Soloists:Â   Kayaks only in this category - no canoes!Â  Soloists will race in 10 yea r age group brackets. You must provide your own kayak and safety equipment  or rent from the Virginia Outdoor Center (V.O.C.) (not included in race f ee).Â  Solo racers must have all of their personal gear approved at the ra ce start by 8:30 in order to race.Â  An email with race information will b e sent prior to race day.Â  Racers must be familiar with the race format a nd other important info before arriving at the race site. If needed, we wi ll arrange for a shuttle to take you back to the race start when it's all  done! Teams:Â Â Teams will race in one of 3 categories: All Male, All Fem ale, or Coed. Canoes and safety gear will be provided by the (V.O.C.).Â an d are included in the race fee. Teams are welcome to bring their own equip ment, but the registration fee will remain the same. Team captains will re ceive an email with an informational attachment. They are responsible for  sharing this info with the other team members. All members must be familia r with the race format and other important info before they arrive at the  race site.Â   Shuttles will be provided from the registration area to the  race start (see below).Â  Please be aware that you must wear helmets (thi s can be a bike helmet or one provided by the VOC).

SUMMARY:36th Josh Billings Runaground Triathlon
DESCRIPTION:Patty Spector 36th Annual Josh Billings Runaground.Â  The "Josh" is the 2n d oldest bike, canoe/kayak, run triathlon in the world!Â  The race begins  in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with a 27-mile scenicÂ and challenging  bike ride through 5 towns, followed by a 5-mile canoe or kayak sprint aro und Stockbridge Bowl, and is completed with a 6.2-mile run around the lake  ending at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox. The "Josh" combines the  scenic beauty of the Berkshires with four exciting sports and the result  is a great day of competition, fun and camaraderie. Following the race, th e Great Josh "Bash" takes place at Tanglewood with music, food, festivitie s, the annual Kids Fun Run and awards. The Josh hasÂ 35 categories divided  into canoe and kayak divisions. Competitors may enter as part of a 4, 3 o r 2 person team or as an Ironperson.Â

SUMMARY:Outdoorsman Triathlon
DESCRIPTION:Ed Sharp The Outdoorsman Triathlon is the nations oldest continuous triath lon and consists of a 1 mile swim, 4 mile run and an 8 mile paddle down th e Little Tennessee River. Individual competition is held on Saturday and 3 -person relays (1 swimmer, 1 runner, 1 paddler) are held on Sunday.Â  In 1 976 outdoorsman Payson Kennedy (founder of the Nantahala Outdoor Center),  Olympic canoeist John Burton, and Georgia Tech professor Russ Callen issue d a challenge to athletes to come battle the raw elements of the Great Smo ky Mountains in an outdoorsman's triathlon. This race even has in the rule s that "assistance with changing clothes, putting on shoes, or supplying f ood or drink to competitors is prohibited. Competitors are on their own on ce they begin the race and can only receive assistance from race officials ". The rules governing the running section state "no form of locomotion ot her than running, walking, or crawling is allowed". A news article in Tria thlon Today concerning the Outdoorsman Triathlon stated that had these com petitors been around 200 years ago "these mountains and gaps would now bea r their names".Â  For new rule changes effective 2013 please check here.
